Electromechanical instability in semicrystalline polymers
نویسندگان
چکیده
When a layer of a semicrystalline polymer is subject to a tensile force in its plane and a voltage through its thickness, the deformation of the layer is initially homogeneous, but it then localizes. The electromechanical instability sets in when the force and the voltage reach critical conditions. The critical conditions are determined in this paper and are related to the following two special cases: the Considère condition for the necking instability and the Stark–Garton condition for the pull-in instability. The general critical conditions show that a tensile force can markedly reduce the critical voltage. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.3186078

Viscoelastic effects on electromechanical instabilities in dielectric elastomers
We present a computational study of the effects of viscoelasticity on the electromechanical behavior of dielectric elastomers. A dynamic, finite deformation finite element formulation for dielectric elastomers is developed that incorporates the effects of viscoelasticity using the nonlinear viscoelasticity theory previously proposed by Reese and Govindjee. The finite element model features a th...
متن کاملCrystalline and Spherulitic Morphology of Polymers Crystallized in Confined Systems
Due to the effects of microphase separation and physical dimensions, confinement widely exists in the multi-component polymer systems (e.g., polymer blends, copolymers) and the polymers having nanoscale dimensions, such as thin films and nanofibers. Semicrystalline polymers usually show different crystallization kinetics, crystalline structure and morphology from the bulk when they are confined...
متن کاملHigh performance polymer particles for composite matrices: poly(arylene ether ether sulfide)s*
A method has been developed for the synthesis of semicrystalline poly(arylene ether ether sulfide) materials by first preparing a soluble, amorphous sulfoxide containing precursor, then rapidly reducing the sulfoxide moiety to sulfide. The sulfoxide polymers are synthesized using conventional nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions between difluorodiphenyl sulfoxide and diphenols. Reductio...
متن کاملEnthalpy recovery in semicrystalline polymers
Constitutive equations are derived for enthalpy recovery in polymeric glasses after thermal jumps. The model is based on the theory of cooperative relaxation in a version of the trapping concept. It is demonstrated that some critical temperature Tcr and some critical degree of crystallinity fcr exist in a semicrystalline polymer above which the energy landscape becomes homogeneous and structura...
متن کاملElectromechanical instability on dielectric polymer surface: Modeling and experiment
We present a dynamic finite element formulation for dielectric elastomers that significantly alleviates the problem of volumetric locking that occurs due to the incompressible nature of the elastomers. We accomplish this by modifying the Q1P0 formulation of Simo et al. [1], and adapting it to the electromechanical coupling that occurs in dielectric elastomers. We demonstrate that volumetr ic lo...
